{"id":7528,"date":"2018-09-21T11:09:31","date_gmt":"2018-09-21T11:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gosquared.com\/blog\/?p=7528"},"modified":"2019-11-28T10:59:31","modified_gmt":"2019-11-28T10:59:31","slug":"weekly-newsletter-150-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gosquared.com\/blog\/weekly-newsletter-150-issues","title":{"rendered":"17,000 subscribers. 450 hours. 150 issues of GoSquared Weekly."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.gosquared.com\/images\/liquidicity\/18_09_18_weekly150\/18_09_18_weekly150_01@2x.jpg\" alt=\"150 Weekly Newsletters\"\/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe show doesn\u2019t go on because it\u2019s ready; it goes on because it\u2019s 11:30.\u201d \u2013 Lorne Michaels, creator and producer of Saturday Night Live<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This week we\u2019re sending out our 150th issue of the GoSquared Weekly newsletter.<\/p>\n<p>Like many things at GoSquared, we discussed the idea of doing a newsletter for months before finally deciding \u201cscrew it, let\u2019s just do it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It can be pretty hard to start something, but it\u2019s even harder to keep doing it, week-in, week-out, for years.<\/p>\n<p>For something we started in 2015, it\u2019s not the longest running project at GoSquared, but it\u2019s certainly on the leaderboard.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve learnt a lot from sending 150 newsletters, so let\u2019s dive right in and share the good, the bad, and the ugly of 150 issues of GoSquared Weekly.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the GoSquared Weekly newsletter?<\/h2>\n<p>GoSquared Weekly is an email newsletter we send out every week (usually on a Friday) to over 17,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>As a team we read a lot of stuff every week \u2013 we share it internally, and often discuss it at length. GoSquared Weekly is our way of boiling down all our internal discussion and best links into a short, snappy email that delivers a selection of the best content on all things growth \u2013 from marketing, to sales techniques, to making smart product decisions.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the core focus of business growth, we also throw in a link here and there that might help you grow as an individual \u2013 by broadening your horizons, or making you think about a topic that isn\u2019t on your usual daily agenda.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, GoSquared Weekly is about educating, inspiring, and entertaining as many people as we can. We know that if we do this consistently, over a long period of time, a small percentage of the people that like us for GoSquared Weekly might some day check us out for the products we build.<\/p>\n<h2>Why do we send out a weekly newsletter?<\/h2>\n<p>We started GoSquared Weekly back in 2015 as a way to share the articles and discussions we were already having internally.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than confining our chatter to the lunch table, or a Slack channel, we felt we\u2019d have no trouble delivering these same conversations to anyone else who\u2019d want to read them.<\/p>\n<p>We were also incredibly inspired by others who consistently deliver great content via email on a predictable schedule. A few of our sources of inspiration:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fullcontact.com\/newsletter\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Mattermark<\/a> (later acquired by FullContact) who managed to send out a daily(!) newsletter with the latest and greatest from the San Francisco tech scene.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.producthunt.com\/newsletter\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">ProductHunt<\/a> with their commentary on the state of latest software products.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hitenism.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Hiten Shah<\/a> who brings so much product insight into our inboxes every week, it\u2019s incredible to think he\u2019s not got an army of writers under him.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ben-evans.com\/newsletter\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Benedict Evans<\/a> who always has an interesting take on the latest tech news every week.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevanlee.com\/newsletter\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Kevan Lee<\/a> of Buffer\u2019s \u201c10 things\u201d newsletter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why a weekly schedule?<\/h2>\n<p>When we started producing GoSquared Weekly, we were extremely unsure if we\u2019d be able to keep up a schedule.<\/p>\n<p>While we would love to do a \u201cGoSquared Daily\u201d we simply didn\u2019t (and still don\u2019t) have the bandwidth to put together a high quality publication every 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>We felt a weekly cadence would be sensible to engage people regularly with the latest and greatest growth insights and inspiration, but we weren\u2019t sure if we\u2019d even be able to stick to that.<\/p>\n<p>We contemplated calling it \u201cThe GoSquared Newsletter\u201d just in case we couldn\u2019t keep to a schedule, and would need to scale back a monthly cadence.<\/p>\n<p>In the end though, we decided to roll with \u201cGoSquared Weekly\u201d  for the following reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The \u201cGoSquared Weekly\u201d name instantly tells the reader \/ subscriber how often to expect an email from us. \u201cThe GoSquared Newsletter\u201d is ambiguous in this regard.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cGoSquared Weekly\u201d was a forcing a function \u2013 to force us to deliver the newsletter every week. The theory was always that we\u2019d be too embarrassed to miss a week. This may sound silly, but it\u2019s true, and has genuinely worked for us.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How do we put together a newsletter each week?<\/h2>\n<h3>Making time<\/h3>\n<p>An obvious concern for anyone committing to something new is how they will make the time for that new activity \u2013 especially an activity on a weekly recurring schedule.<\/p>\n<p>From the very start, the newsletter has always been written, designed, and produced by James Gill (hello, that\u2019s me the writer of this article too). There are a lot of tasks on everyone\u2019s plates, so the first thing we did was ensure we had time for it.<\/p>\n<p>After a few weeks of being a little haphazard, we settled on Friday mornings as the time where James could find time to spend on Weekly. So a weekly recurring event was created \u2013 for 2 hours every Friday morning at 10am, James has had \u201cProduct GoSquared Weekly\u201d in his calendar.<\/p>\n<p>This time every Friday morning is sacred \u2013 it can\u2019t be booked over, it can\u2019t be interrupted, and it certainly can\u2019t be bumped into the next week.<\/p>\n<p>A neat learning from this \u2013 often calendars are only used for booking out time for meetings \u2013 whether with team members, customers, or investors \u2013 but calendars can be used to book out time for you \u2013 for yourself. This is a powerful way to ensure you genuinely set time aside each week to guarantee focused work.<\/p>\n<h2>Design of Weekly<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019ve always enjoyed making things look good at GoSquared, and our newsletter is no exception. If you\u2019ve ever tried designing an HTML email you\u2019ll know how fun it can be.<\/p>\n<p>It feels like you\u2019re stepping back into the nineties whenever you have to attempt to make an email look great across the wide array of email clients out there.<\/p>\n<p>From the start, we\u2019ve focused on making Weekly something you\u2019ll look forward to receiving \u2013 with a colourful header image, and as many images as possible from the great content behind the links we share.<\/p>\n<h3>Fully responsive emails<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.gosquared.com\/images\/liquidicity\/18_09_18_weekly150\/18_09_18_weekly150_17@2x.jpg\" alt=\"Fully responsive email newsletter design\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Designing emails is hard \u2013 ensuring they work in as many email clients as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Designing emails that are responsive and actually look good at all sizes is really hard.<\/p>\n<p>The design of GoSquared Weekly is always evolving, but we\u2019re thrilled to have a design that works on both phone and desktop email clients given how many people increasingly choose to read Weekly on their phones.<\/p>\n<h2>Header images and evolution<\/h2>\n<p>Each issue of Weekly features a unique header \u2013 some more distinctive than others. They probably didn\u2019t even see it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Although we\u2019ll never truly know, it\u2019s likely that this assumption would be fair in many cases. <\/p>\n<p>But here, James (me again &#8211; hello, thank you for reading this far) CEO of GoSquared, really has been writing this all along. James started writing the weekly 150 weeks ago for a few reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The GoSquared team is small, we didn\u2019t have a designated content writer or marketing team, so it was picked up by the existing team.<\/li>\n<li>James really enjoys writing. A significant portion of the articles featured come from his own reading list, and it just seemed to make sense.<\/li>\n<li>When a decision is made to do something, especially when it is adding work, it often feels easier in some ways to put that on your own plate, not load up someone else\u2019s.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>So, why would this change?<\/h3>\n<p>As GoSquared is growing, so are everyone\u2019s roles and lists of things to do.<\/p>\n<p>We want to make sure the newsletter doesn\u2019t just \u201ckeep going\u201d, but instead gets better and better \u2013 we want to deliver <em>higher<\/em> quality, <em>more<\/em> interesting, and <em>better<\/em> researched content every week.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve reached the point where James\u2019 time is too restricted to dedicate the time each week to maintain, let alone dramatically improve the newsletter.<\/p>\n<p>But this isn\u2019t to say it\u2019s not important. It\u2019s a great way to start conversations and get to know your heroes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ask people to subscribe to your newsletter<\/strong> \u2013 if you think they could genuinely benefit from reading it. You don\u2019t have to keep the asking purely to online \u2013 many of our newsletter subscribers have come from face-to-face discussions and events.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Feature older content<\/strong> \u2013 if you have lots of \u201cevergreen\u201d content, don\u2019t be afraid to share it to your readers. Chances are most of them won\u2019t have seen it before, and could still benefit from it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Run it by someone else<\/strong> \u2013 everyone makes mistakes, so send a draft to a friend (or your mum) before sending out to catch any silly mistakes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Have patience<\/strong> \u2013 growing a loyal readership takes far longer than many people think it does.
