Seeing the planet survive and thrive for future generations is a cause we find it hard to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all feel strongly about this, but until recently, we naively didn\u2019t think we could do much about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the more we\u2019ve been learning about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gosquared.com\/blog\/what-is-a-sustainable-business\">climate<\/a>, the more we\u2019re realising how much more we all need to do \u2014 from making small changes in our daily routines, to building more climate conscious businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we\u2019ve been doing a number of things to grow our awareness and understanding, to share, and to build a better business:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We\u2019ve started a sustainability section on our blog<\/li><li>We\u2019ve started a newsletter focused on covering the the intersection of digital marketing and climate<\/li><li>We\u2019ve planted over a thousand trees<\/li><li>We\u2019ve started a new product \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecosend.io\">EcoSend<\/a> \u2014 the first and only climate conscious email marketing software.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sharing-what-we-learn\">Sharing what we learn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Clear thinking becomes clear writing; one can\u2019t exist without the other.&#8221; \u2014\u00a0William Zinser<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the things we\u2019ve found at GoSquared is to share what we learn at every step of the day. It helps others but it also helps us ensure we understand what we\u2019re learning. In fact, since 2007 it\u2019s exactly what we\u2019ve done on this blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So when it comes to the environment, and having a positive impact on climate, we are learning as fast as we can. Part of that learning is to share \u2014 by sharing we are clarifying our thinking and highlighting areas we are strong and weak. We are learning about the topic more deeply and more concretely by writing posts just like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of having the maximum impact on climate, we stumbled upon a topic that caught our eye: Effective Altruism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-learning-about-effective-altruism\">Learning about effective altruism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Several years ago James Gill (co-founder and CEO of GoSquared) signed up for <a href=\"https:\/\/founderspledge.com\/members\/1189\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Founders Pledge<\/a>, an organisation that encourages business founders to give a portion of the value they generate to altruistic causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founders Pledge have been proponents of effective altruism since they started, and it\u2019s where we first came across the term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To summarise, effective altruism is about having the maximum positive impact with the resources you have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Effective altruism emphasises being impartial with choosing the causes to focus on, a well reasoned prioritisation of causes, and maximising the cost-effectiveness of different solutions to problems that exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get started with effective altruism: Ask the right questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While it may sound complicated and scientific, you can start on your journey to effective altruism by asking some very basic questions \u2014 things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How can we do more \u201cgood\u201d with the resources we currently have?<\/li><li>How can I make the maximum impact with where I channel my efforts?<\/li><li>How can we all have a bigger impact by collectively doing good things better?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples of people taking action within effective altruism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While at GoSquared, we\u2019re particularly passionate about climate-related causes, effective altruism forces one to zoom out and look at all of the areas you can have a positive impact on others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few key cause areas include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Global health and development<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People focused on global health and development are aiming to improve the lives of as many people as possible \u2014 regardless of where they live. Often, a high impact approach (most effectively altruistic) is to influence policy change at a government level to have lasting, wide reaching improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Improving animal welfare<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From factory farming, to many wild animals facing possible extinction, animal welfare is a large area of focus for many in the effective altruism community. Organisations focused on improving animal welfare are working on alternatives to meat, improving policy around factory farming, and driving improvements to animal welfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safeguarding the long-term future<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People interested in this area are working on reducing existential risks \u2014 things that risk the long term future of the planet and the livelihoods of future generations. This includes areas such as preventing pandemics, mitigating climate change, promoting beneficial AI (this might surprise some), and reducing nuclear threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advocate for effective altruism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While effective altruism is still a relatively small movement, those in it are keen to drive more awareness \u2014 more people being more effective can only be a good thing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several communities worth exploring to learn more about effective altruism, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.givingwhatwecan.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Giving What We Can<\/a>: a community of effective givers.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.givingwhatwecan.org\/charities\/80000-hours\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">80,000 Hours<\/a>: advice on high-impact careers.<\/li><li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.givingwhatwecan.org\/charities\/centre-for-effective-altruism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre for Effective Altruism<\/a>: a community around the ideas of effective altruism.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.givingwhatwecan.org\/charities\/charity-entrepreneurship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charity Entrepreneurship<\/a>: incubates startups that could go on to have a large impact.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openphilanthropy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Open Philanthropy<\/a>:\u00a0provides grants to projects across many cause areas.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We hope you have enjoyed the post and learnt as much from reading it as we have from writing it.
