GoSquared turns 17

By
Celebrating seventeen years of building good software for good businesses.

We’re a little older.

But this year, we feel a lot wiser.

Our sixteenth year in business was, I believe, the single biggest year of change GoSquared has ever seen.

As in previous years, we’ve updated our timeline so you can see the major milestones we’ve achieved since we started back in 2006.

Today I just want to focus on the most significant change we’ve made: the change in the way we approach business.

Better business

As 2022 progressed, we became more conscious of the world around us.

We have always tried to build the best software we can and serve our customers the way we ourselves would like to be treated.

But we always underestimated the impact we could have. We always assumed impacting things like the climate and the communities around us was primarily done by charities and other good causes.

What business does a business have in helping out on topics outside of building and selling?

It’s about redefining the divide between business and charity.

Why expect only charities to do good? What part can a small business like ours play? Can we have an outsized impact? What if we tried to do more to help?

We never wanted to sound like we were parroting a line from Silicon Valley, but we increasingly realised we could and should be doing more to help, especially when it comes to fighting climate change.

So in the last year we’ve come together on several occasions to help in our local communities, we’ve introduced a whole new product focused on climate change we’ve been accredited the Good Business Charter, support the Terra Carta, and are working towards achieving B-Corp status.

EcoSend

Our focus on climate has led us down a whole new path, and a whole new product.

We want to see a world where everyone is conscious of their environmental impact — in everything they do, buy, and interact with.

Software is still largely being overlooked as part of this, despite a recent report showing how our devices and the services they use could contribute as much as the airline industry when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions.

It’s easy to forget that the software we use is running on servers in data centres around the world, travelling through countless technologies all consuming energy, much of which is not renewable.

We want to see the world of software get cleaner. So we’re leading the way with our new product, EcoSend: the climate conscious email marketing platform.

Our mission with EcoSend is to reduce the carbon footprint of marketing email.

The GoSquared Timeline

We’ve made an exciting start, but when it comes to turning 18, I can’t wait to report the progress we’ve made on this mission.

We hope you found this set of lessons valuable. If you’re interested to learn more about the history of GoSquared check out our timeline of 17 years.
